As I faced my own personal hell, my own life ambush, I surrounded myself with reminders that mindset matters in every battle. Beyond the pictures of my kids, I had two symbolic canvas prints that I saw every morning when I woke up and every night before I slept. These images were my anchors. I also wore a paracord bracelet with the word “overcome” in bold letters, a daily reminder that I could conquer the demons I was facing. These symbols were more than just objects; they were lifelines, reminding me that I wasn’t alone in my battle. From these, and a sign that said, “A True Friend Sticks Like an Octopus to Your Face,” the idea for the Coin of Resilience was born.
This coin is deeply personal, not just for what it symbolizes, but for the journey that inspired its creation. It’s a reflection of the stories I’ve heard from Gold Star families, the struggles shared by veterans, and the battles I’ve fought within myself. I’ve learned that the weight of our scars—whether seen or unseen—can feel lighter when shared, when we know we aren’t alone in carrying them. This coin was designed to serve as a daily reminder that, no matter how tough the road, you don’t have to walk it alone.
Design and Symbolism
One side of the Coin of Resilience features the mighty Kraken entwined with the Spartan. helmet—a powerful symbol of unbreakable discipline, courage, and the brotherhood that stands shoulder to shoulder in every fight. Spartans knew their true strength was in each other, facing every battle. This side of the coin is a reminder that you don’t have to face your challenges alone. It captures the essence of resilience and solidarity, the spirit of fighting together.

Flip the coin, and you’ll find the Kraken in its full glory—an embodiment of raw power, resilience, and the ability to thrive under the most intense pressure. The Kraken symbolizes your inner strength to rise, adapt, and push through, no matter how insurmountable the odds feel. These two sides reflect the same journey: the fight within and the support around you.

A Symbol to Support Others
The Coin of Resilience isn’t just about my story—it’s about all of us. It’s not a personal challenge coin but a symbol meant to help others find their strength and support. In creating this coin, it was important to extend its impact beyond just the symbolism. That’s why all proceeds from the Coin of Resilience are donated to an organization that aligns with the coin’s purpose—supporting those who need it most. We sought out a place that embodies the spirit of the coin and serves the community it’s meant to uplift. This is more than a coin; it’s a commitment to be there for those who are fighting their own battles, to remind them they are never alone, and to reinforce the power of standing together.
Whether it’s your “swim buddy,” your “battle buddy,” or your “octopus,” the message is clear: you are not alone in fighting trauma and PTSD. Our goal, our hope, is to get these coins into the hands of those who need them, making them a part of their everyday carry. So, when those trauma demons strike—through nightmares, flashbacks, or other triggers—they can look at this coin and be reminded to reach out, to call that person who will stand by their side and help them navigate the storm. The battle against trauma and PTSD doesn’t vanish, but this coin serves as a powerful reminder to fight together, embracing the characteristics of the Kraken and the Spartan. Together, we fight; together, we stand.
