"Resilience Isn’t Found—It’s Forged in the Fire"

Resilience. It’s a word we often hear, but how often do we truly think about what it means? For many of us, resilience is not a trait we are born with—it’s a skill we build, one forged through struggle, hardship, and growth. It’s not found in the easy moments but in the fiery trials that test us, break us down, and ultimately, shape us into something stronger.

This saying—“Resilience isn’t found—it’s forged in the fire”—has stayed with me because it captures the essence of life’s hardest lessons. It’s not just about survival; it’s about transformation. It’s about taking the scars we carry and using them to stand tall, to protect those who matter most, and to remind ourselves and others that we are capable of enduring.

The Fires of Life

Life throws us all into the fire at some point. The flames may look different for everyone—a personal loss, a struggle with trauma, or the weight of supporting someone you love through their battles. For me, the fire has been my own trauma but also the trauma that affects my kids and kids across the United States. As a parent, it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever endured, standing in the breach, knowing I can’t take away the pain but refusing to let them face it alone while also bearing the scars of my own set of fires and stories.

Each scar tells a story of a moment when life tried to break us and failed. They are reminders of battles fought, lessons learned, and strength earned. And while we might wish we could shield our loved ones from every hardship, the truth is that resilience isn’t something we can hand them—it’s something they must forge for themselves. But we can stand beside them, arms open, ready to support and protect when the flames feel too hot to bear.

Forged Together

The truth about resilience is that it’s not forged in isolation. Yes, the struggle is personal, but the ability to rise from it often depends on the people standing beside us. Whether it’s a parent, a friend, a trusted confidant, or even a stranger who extends a helping hand, these connections become the hammer and anvil on which resilience is shaped.

This is why the stories we share, the symbols we carry, and the people we lean on matter so much. They remind us that even when life is at its hardest, we are not alone. We all need an “octopus,” a “battle buddy,” or someone who will stick with us through thick and thin, helping us shoulder the burden when the fire threatens to consume us.

Resilience Is a Choice

The hardest part about resilience is that it requires a choice. When faced with adversity, we have to choose to endure, to rise, to learn, and to fight another day. It’s not an easy choice, and it’s one we often have to make over and over again. But in making that choice, we transform. The fire that once threatened to destroy us becomes the forge that strengthens us.

As we navigate life’s struggles, it’s important to remember that resilience is not a solo journey. Lean on the people you trust. Share your story. Accept that it’s okay to carry scars—they are proof of your strength. And if you see someone standing in their own fire, offer them the reminder that they are not alone.

A Call to Stand Together

Resilience isn’t about never falling—it’s about rising every time you do. It’s about standing in the breach for others, carrying the weight when they can’t, and showing them that the fire doesn’t have to win. Together, we forge strength. Together, we rise.
